12th AF

The Twelfth AF was activated on 20 August 1942 and participated in the invasion of Algeria and French Morocco in November, 1942 known as Operation Torch. Groups under the 12th Air Force command included the 2nd Bombardment Group (H), 97th Bombardment Group (H), 99th Bombardment Group (H), 301st Bombardment Group (H), 82nd Fighter Group, 325th Fighter Group, 47th Bombardment Group, 319th Bombardment Group and 321st Bombardment Group. These groups operated from North Africa until the heavy bombardment groups and many fighter groups were transferred to the newly formed 15th AF. The light and medium bombardment groups remained with the 12th as commands moved to Italy, Sicily and Corsica.
